Resources
This is where I will be listing all of the current and past resources I have gone through to come up with my own training program. Many of these books/sites were written by fellow competitors and friends. I want to thank all of you very much for contributing your time and effort. It has helped me a lot!
“Throwing Lab”
Author: Matt Vincent (Current World Champion)
Description: This is a great resource for getting the technical break downs of the throws in the highland games. It also lists equipment to purchase and also covers different drills to go over in your training. One thing to remember though is that the throws are broken down for Matt Vincent’s style of throwing and may not necessarily be complimentary to your body type or make up. Play around with it and try different techniques. Matt has also written two other resources: Training Lab and Strength Lab. Give them a read, I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

“Behemoth: Power Training for Strength Athletes”
Author: Dan Mckim (Previous World Champion)
Description: Dan Mckim has released upon the world his secret to becoming a great and powerful athlete. The program is really basic and the book also covers some diet examples as well so that you have an idea of what you should be eating during the program. I had to make slight changes to the list of movements to fit my style of lifting and what I wanted to accomplish. That being said, this is an awesome program and it will make you a great over all strength athlete. Program length: 15 weeks

“A Contrarian Approach to the Highland Games”
Author: Mike and Mindy Pockoski (Accomplished Professional Heavy Events Athletes)
Description: With the understanding that everyone throws differently, Mike and Mindy have created a book and DVD combo to try and get you to throw according to your style and not necessarily someone else’s. It still covers the basics of positioning and finish, but it takes into consideration that what might work for some people, will not work for others. They go through a lot of drills in this program to help you get to what feels right. I highly recommend this book/DVD especially when you’re stuck in your throwing or feel like you’ve reached a plateau.

“Becoming a Supple Leopard”
Author: Dr.Kelly Starrett
Description: This book should be part of every athlete’s library. It takes you through many different massage and stretching techniques and explains in detail the benefit of each. It also take you through the main lifts and shows you how to properly preform the lift so that you’re using your maximum biological potential. The book also covers voodoo flossing, foam rolling and muscle smashing techniques to help you stay loose and injury free! Kelly is the best at what he does and I’m thankful that he has taken the time to write a book so that we may benefit from his practices.
